Her father retired from the army and worked as a driver in Excise of Taxation department. She is one of the four siblings in her family. Her eldest sister Usha was the first wrestling coach. At present she has a son named Arjun and a daughter named Radhika.
She could achieve a lot but her journey was not so easy. She had to break lot of barriers to reach her destination. It is a true motivational story for the youth.
Sunita used to see girls being treated unfairly in her neighborhood so she had a dream to wear police uniform and could make people realize their mindset towards women. Her mother always used to encourage her to study so that she can become independent unlike her mother, but her father wanted to give her the basic education and get her married as soon as possible.
Her journey into sports began when she followed her eldest sister Usha into wrestling. She also learnt Judo along with one of her friend.
She did not have suitable clothes as required in sports so her mother stitched tracksuit for her. She even did not have proper sports shoes and was constantly reminded about it by her coach. One day she got tired of getting nagged so she explained her situation to the coach with bold voice in front of the whole team. Since then she was named "Jhansi ki Rani" and the one who had courage to raise voice for the truth.
She never used to get attention of others due to her simple looks, being poor in academics and also being the middle one among all her siblings. Later it was her performance in wrestling which caught people’s eyes towards her.
She used to do household work, like, carrying 9/10litres of water and washing clothes. This in turn added to her strength which was very much required for wrestling.
She used to practice to best of her ability as long as 4 times a day unlike her counterparts.
By this time Sunita was winning medals. In the year 1998 she participated in her first competition and won silver medal. Success boosted her confidence and the passion for wrestling began to flow in her veins.
Her popularity was rising and now lot of people started knowing her. Her hidden talent was now getting revealed to her father. Her father's sister was extremely outrageous towards her and strongly opposed her love for wrestling.
Seeing father's reluctance her mother along with her 4 siblings went on a hunger strike to make him understand her passion for the game. They wanted his permission for her to play her loved sport. After 2 days of their hunger strike he finally allowed her to continue playing but was still not convinced internally.
Few days after the permission she went for her National Trial. That was the first time her father saw her game so it was a big day for her. She felt immense psychological pressure to prove to his father and relatives that her decision to play was right. As she continued to play her father realized his daughter's dream and finally she earned his full support.
She then started playing Dangal and the medals began to flow in.
